LEDs light up the night
The Roppongi Hills complex is awash in foot lighting generated
by Blue Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) embedded into the ground.
LED lights from the entrance's ceiling bathe the grounds in a
blue and white light. This ambience is all made possible through
the use of Matsushita Electric Works (National) "everLEDs",
part of its LED series of lighting devices.

Energy-saving Lights
-- LEDs may Displace Light Bulbs in Your Town
Embedded in the ground are lighting devices in which blue
light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used.
At the entrance,
blue and white light are coming also from the ceiling.
The light sources are LEDs, dubbed EVERLEDs, from
Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd.
- I would mention the location, Roppoingi Hills,
even though it doesn't appear in the paragraph.
- alsoはcomingの前へ。
For lighting, we have some nice verbs we can use. For example, "blue and white light bathe the ground from the ceiling."
Or "blue and white light pour from the ceiling."

LED Illuminates Busy Streets
The light source imbedded in the ground is a lighting system that uses blue-color light emitting diodes (LED). Blue and white lights are dripping from the entrance ceiling, too. The product used here is 'everLEDs', one of LED illumination series by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
- I would mention where the location is, namely, Roppongi
Hills, since we're starting the translation from the
middle of the article.
- For lighting, we don't use the word "dripping" but we can
use other water-based terms. For example, "The area was
bathed in blue and white light." or "Roppongi Hills was
awash in the soft, white light".
- one of the LED illumination series
[訳例4]
Firefly-like LEDs
could be an ultimate lighting device, saving a lot of energy.
The light illuminating the
front square is from an array of blue light emitting diodes
(LEDs) embedded in the ground. Also at the entrance of the
building, LEDs mounted on the ceiling project blue and white
lights on the ground. They are all LED-based lighting devices
available from Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd.,
“Ever LEDs”.

Solid-State Fireflies Light Up the Town
The light sources are blue
light-emitting diodes (LEDs) embedded in the ground. The entrance
hall is also lit by blue and white LEDs installed in the
ceiling. These are all the
EVERLEDS series of LED lamps from Matsushita
Electric Works.
- We will discuss in class. But first, I would put fireflies
in quotes. Also, “solid-state fireflies” sounds very
ambiguous. I think I understand where you were going with
it, but it would confuse most readers.
- I'd still mention the location, Roppongi Hills, even though
we didn't have to translate it. Otherwise, the first
paragraph reads too vaguely. I realize this is a problem
when we start in the middle of an article.
- I believe the official way to write this product name is
“everLEDs”.

LED lighting is created by mounting a large number of LEDs onto
a substrate, forming a panel lamp. Compared to standard
fluorescent bulbs, LEDs consume only 1/10 the energy and have a
lifespan that can last up to ten times longer.
While LEDs fall short in reaching overall brightness
levels of current fluorescent bulbs, lighting
manufacturers are devising methods to close that gap.
[訳例2]
An LED illumination lamp is made by mounting multiple LEDs on a substrate. It is estimated that an LED illumination lamp consumes about one tenth of the power a fluorescent lamp does, but lasts more than ten times longer than the fluorescent lamp. One drawback is that the brightness of today's LEDs is far less than that of fluorescent lamps. Manufacturers of LED illumination products are finding a better design to achieve a higher luminous efficiency.

An LED lighting fixture has multiple LEDs mounted on a substrate. Its power consumption is said to be one-tenth smaller than that of a fluorescent lamp; its life, ten-plus times longer. The drawback is its brightness, which falls behind a fluorescent lamp at the present moment. The manufacturers are pursuing a better design for efficient light emission.

Although LEDs are primarily being used for interior design, the
day when LEDs replace fluorescent bulbs may soon be fact rather
than fiction, provided brightness improves and prices continue
to drop. "Two or three years ago, I would have said it would
take 20 to 30 years for the LED market to really take off.
But now with the advances made, I think we've compressed that
time frame down to 5 to 10 years", says Mr. Shuji Nakamura, a
materials professor at the University of California at
Santa Barbara and responsible for creating the first blue,
green, ultraviolet and white-light LEDs. The Japan Research and
Development Center for Metals estimates that if Japan switches
over to LEDs for all of its lighting needs, an energy savings
equivalent to the power of 11 medium-sized nuclear power plants
could be attained.
[訳例2]
For indoor illumination, most uses of LEDs are now limited for
ornamental lighting.
However, depending on their improvements in luminous efficiency
and price reduction, LEDs have a high possibility to replace
fluorescent lamps. Shuji Nakamura, professor at the University
of California, Santa Barbara, commented, “A few years ago,
many analysts said that it would take twenty to thirty years
until the LED lighting market takes off. However, now I guess,
that will to be only five to ten years.”
An estimation made by
the Japan Research and Development Center for Materials
states that, if all the domestic lighting devices are replaced
by LEDs, the amount of power that equals to the
power produced by
11 medium-sized nuclear power plants can be saved.

[訳例3]
The current LED lamps for indoor use are mostly intended for
interior decoration. If they have enough brightness and a
reasonable price in the future, it's possible that LED
lamps replace
their fluorescent counterparts. Shuji Nakamura, professor at the University of
California, Santa Barbara says, “Only a few years ago,
full-scale market introduction of LED lamps
seemed to take 20 to 30
years, but it seems
probable in 5 to 10 years.” According to estimates by the
Japan Research and Development Center for Metals, replacing all
domestic lighting
fixtures with LED lamps can save as much power
as 11 middle-size
nuclear power plants generate.
- lamps will replace
- Although not in the Japanese, it may not be a bad idea to
give just a little more background on Professor Nakamura.
That way, the reader is aware that Professor Nakamura is very
qualified to be speaking on the subject of LEDs.
- I would change the wording here just a little. ”…seemed
to be 20 to 30 years away, but…” The way it is written
sounds as if full-scale market introduction has already
happened.
- but now it seems
- 'Domestic lighting fixtures' sounds like lights and
lamps for your home. Instead of 'domestic' let's use
'Japan' for 国内, so there won't be any confusion. Also
'lighting fixtures' might be too limiting and narrow of a
term here. We need a broader expression that will cover
国内照明.
- as generated by 11 middle-size…
[訳例4]
For the interior use, LEDs are mainly used for decorative
purposes. It is feasible, however, to replace conventional
fluorescent lamps with LEDs if more emission efficiency and lower cost are
achieved. “The time required for the LED lighting appliance
market to take off, estimated as 20-30 years a couple of years ago, would be
possibly reduced to 5-10 years,” says Prof. Shuji Nakamura at UCSB (University of
California Santa Barbara). “One study shows that if all the
lighting appliances across the nation are replaced by LEDs,
substantial amounts of power, as much as eleven medium-sized
nuclear power stations can generate, would be saved,”
according to JRCM (Japan Research and Development Center for
Metals).

Though indoor lighting still accounts for most of the LED lamp
applications at present, LEDs promise to replace fluorescent
light in the future. To this end, major technological breakthroughs
might include more enhanced luminous efficacy and substantial cost
reduction. “A few years ago, it was forecast that the LED
lighting market would take a few decades to take off. But now it
seems a matter of five to ten years,” notes Shuji Nakamura,
professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

テキストのタイトルにある「蛍」をめぐって、はからずも異文化間での「虫」に対する認識のズレを体験的に実感することになりました。Firefly-like LEDs、あるいは Solid-state fireflies…
