第21回:「人命探査装置」

昔から怖いものは「地震、雷、火事、オヤジ」と言われてきました。その中のオヤジの立場が今ではまるでありません。無差別の「オヤジ狩り」があったりして、オヤジのどこが怖いかという時代になっています。

そんなことより、車に乗れば衝突の恐れ、飛行機に乗れば墜落の恐れ、船に乗れば沈没の恐れ。されば家の中でじっとおとなしくしていれば安全かというと、日本列島どこに住んでも地震の恐れ。

このような不可避の自然災害では被災後の緊急救助活動がなにより重要です。消防庁は阪神・淡路大震災を教訓に大幅に体制を強化し、先頃の新潟中越地震では東京消防庁の人命探査装置シリウスが活躍して二歳の可愛い坊やを救出することができました。

ところでこの装置、地震のないドイツの製品というのは皮肉なことです。

  2. Are you intentionally using a different pair of words here? Earlier you used "debris and rubble."
  3. Perhaps "movement" or "functioning" may work better.
  4. This sounds like a needle is inserted into the subject.
  5. I know this is what the Japanese says, but it sounds like you are comparing humans and non-humans (in other words, monsters or beasts). Maybe it would be clearer if you said "a person or not."
  6. Are you implying that Sirius ignores the object if it isn't a human?
  7. What is a combination of an adult and a child? A teenager?
  8. Victims of a disaster are not ill, they may be injured but they are not ill.
  9. To be exact, Sirius is not installed. If a machine is portable, it can be placed somewhere, but not installed.
  10. This doesn't sound right. Are you trying to express "pinpointing"?
  11. I think "can" may be better here.
  12. A word like "searching" may be better.

テキストの「電磁波」があまりにくどいので何か別の表現をと考え、これを RF (無線周波数)、high frequency(高周波、狭義は短波)もしくは microwave(マイクロ波)に置き換えるなら、それなりの確信が要ります。さらに、シリウスが低周波と高周波を用いる魚群探知機のようなものでないことも確認しなければなりません。

そんなことに興味も関心もない、または調べる暇も必要もないのであれば、Gregさんのような訳はやや味気ないけど無難ということになります。
