■ Filtration system
Raw water is supplied through the raw water pump to the membrane module. The circulating pump generates a circulation flow, thereby ensuring a sufficient flow over the surface of the membrane. This reduces the amount of sludge and other suspended substances that accumulate on the surface of the membrane, extending the period between physical washings, and enabling the system to handle highly turbid raw water without any difficulty.

Inner Pressure Type
[Filtration Process]
A raw water pump supplies raw water to a membrane module; a circulating pump circulates the water to maintain an appropriate speed of the water flow along a membrane. This water circulation prevents suspended matter from staying on the membrane surface. (1) The filtration process, therefore, spares the need (2) of frequent physical cleanings and facilitates filtration of high-turbidity raw water.
- The filtration process is being mentioned for the first time here, so it would probably not be a good idea to use the definite article. The definite article points out that this topic has appeared or been mentioned before.
- I think the preposition "for" works better here.

Filtration Technology
Raw water is supplied to a membrane module by a raw water pump and a certain fluid velocity on the surface of the membrane is maintained by circulation flow generated by a circulation pump. Assurance of the fluid velocity prevents the surface of the membrane from being plugged with suspended (1) matters, which requires (2) for less frequent physical cleaning, so that even (3) high turbid raw water can be treated successfully.
- I think the singular form of this word is generally used in cases like this (suspended matter).
- The preposition isn’t needed here.
- This should be "highly turbid."

■ Filtering method Raw water is supplied to a membrane module by a raw water pump and secures membrane surface flow velocity by circulating flow created by a circulating pump. By doing this (1) physical washing interval can be made longer by preventing (2) that a suspensoid is confined on the membrane surface and it can cope with high turbidity raw water without problem.
- I think this segment would be easier to understand if you put a comma between these words.
- This segment is a bit hard to understand. I think the word "that" creates a clause that is an incomplete thought. Perhaps this could be simplified to say something like "…by preventing suspended substances from accumulating on the membrane surface…"
[訳例5]
(Inside-Out Flow)
Filtration process
Feed water is pumped into a membrane module, where a circulating pump causes turbulent flow to maintain flow velocities high enough to keep suspended solids from depositing on the membrane surface, thereby allowing highly turbid water to be treated with longer intervals between physical washing needs.

An internally pressurized type
Filtering method
A raw water pump is used to supply raw water to a membrane module and a circulation pump makes the water circulate and produces a certain flow rate at the membrane. This ensures that (1) the physical cleaning period is long enough to handle highly turbid raw water by preventing suspended substances from accumulating on the membrane surface.
- As we discussed in class, the interpretation of this passage is backwards. The issue is not the length of the cleaning period becoming longer, but rather, the interval between cleanings can become longer.

■ Cleaning system
Physical cleaning
Physical cleaning
Filtration is done by pumping raw water supplied by the raw water pump through the hollow fiber. The raw water is forced from the inside of the hollow fiber through the walls to the outside. As the filter gradually becomes clogged from continuous use, physical cleaning is carried out at regular intervals. This cleaning is conducted by water from the backwash pump being passed from the outside of the membrane to the inside of the membrane, washing away the grit and other impurities adhering to the membrane. The cleaning substantially restores the membrane to its initial condition. However, as there may be substances clogging the membrane that backwashing is unable to remove, causing the obstruction to progressively worsen, regular cleaning of the membrane with chemicals should be carried out.
Chemical cleaning
If the membrane is in use over an extended period of time, substances that cannot be removed by backwashing will gradually accumulate and lead to clogging, and an increase in the transmembrane pressure difference. Regular chemical cleaning must be performed to clear away whatever obstructing substances backwashing has been unable to remove.
[訳例2]
[Physical Cleaning]
A raw water pump supplies raw water into the inside of a hollow fiber so that the water may (1) permeate through the membrane of the fiber. Because continuous filtration clogs the membrane, regular physical cleanings are needed. A physical cleaning uses a backwashing pump to let water flow from outside of a membrane into inside of the membrane in order to wash off the residue on the inner surface of the membrane. Although this cleaning process helps restore near-original performance of the membrane, regular cleanings using chemicals are necessary to clear away residue that physical cleanings alone can’t remove.
[Chemical Cleaning]
When a filtration system is used over a long period of time, the membrane gradually becomes clogged with residue that can’t be removed by backwashing. Since the clog increases the membrane pressure difference, (2) the clog must be washed with chemicals and removed at regular intervals.
- Two things about this segment. First, I think the word "permeate" is too passive. I think the basic idea here is to describe that water is forced through or pumped through the membrane; not merely permeate. Second, since the word "permeate" means to pass through, the word "through" is redundant.
- I think what is described here is wrong. You are saying that the clogs are washed (or cleaned). Why would the clogs be washed with chemicals? Is there some reason to have clean clogs? I think what you need to express is that the clogs are removed through washing or that clogs are washed away; not that the clogs are washed.
[訳例3]
Cleaning Technology
Physical Cleaning
“Filtration” is performed by (1) supplying raw water from inside of the hollow fiber membrane to outside by the raw water pump. However, continuous filtration gradually increases loadings on the membrane, (2) which need to be removed by "physical cleaning" performed (3) with a certain interval. The physical cleaning (4) is to introduce water from outside of the membrane to inside by a backflush pump so that the impurities accumulated on the membrane are removed and the performance of the membrane is almost fully recovered. (5) Loadings that cannot be removed by the physical cleaning and may increase over time are removed by performing chemical cleaning periodically.
Chemical Cleaning
Through a long period of operation, the membrane suffers increased loadings that cannot be removed by the backflush cleaning, causing a higher transmembrane pressure difference. Such loadings need to be removed by cleaning with a chemical periodically.
- I think the word "supplying" is too weak; it doesn't express any action. The basic idea here is that raw water is pumped or forced through the fibers by the raw water pump.
- It is not really clear what the word “which” is connected to. Do you mean to say that the membrane needs to be removed? Doesn’t the text say that the substances that clog the membrane need to be removed?
- This should be "…performed at certain intervals."
- The construction of this segment is a bit awkward. The use of "is" doesn't feel right. I think it would be sufficient to say "The physical cleaning is done by introducing water from …"
- It's not exactly clear what "loadings" refers to. Does it refer to substances that clog the membrane? Or accumulated impurities?
[訳例4]
■ Washing method
Physical washing
"Filtering" is performed by supplying the raw water from the inside of the hollow fiber to the outside by the raw water pump. Apply “physical washing” (1) with regular interval as continuous filtering causes clogging gradually. (2) Its process is to spread the water from the outside of the membrane to the inside by a countercurrent pump to wash dirt and the membrane performance (3) can be almost restored.
Also, clogging (4) which can not be eliminated by the physical washing must be cleaned by chemical regularly. On the membrane cleaned by the chemical the clogging which can not be eliminated by the countercurrent washing builds up gradually and the membrane differential pressure will be becoming high. It is required to wash out chemicals on regular base choking substance which can not be eliminated by the countercurrent washing.
- I think the correct preposition here is "at" regular intervals.
- Is it clear what "Its" refers to? To me, it is unclear whether you are referring to physical washing, membranes, or clogging.
- This needs to be changed a little. Right now, it may give the reader a mistaken idea of the degree of restoration the membrane undergoes. The membrane is restored to almost its initial level of performance. If you say that the membrane is almost restored, it means that it does not work at all - that restoration failed.
- Check a grammar book on the usage of which and that.
[訳例5]
Membrane cleaning methods
Physical washing
Filtration takes place when the feed water pumped into a hollow-fiber membrane is forced out through the membrane wall. The membrane needs to be physically washed at certain intervals as it (1) is plugged after a long period of continuous use. Physical washing is performed with a backflow pump to flush water backward through the membrane. The filtration performance is restored (2) for the most part after physical washing processes to release foreign particles off the membrane surface. As the membrane is used continuously, however, the membrane pores are gradually plugged to eventually reach a (3) fairly advanced stage that physical washing cannot remove (4) entrapped contaminants, which can only be removed through chemical washing.
Chemical washing
Chemicals are also used periodically to clean the membrane as gradual pore fouling raises the differential pressure across the membrane (5) to eventually prevent backward flushing from sufficiently cleaning the membrane.
- I think this would sound better if you used "…as it becomes plugged after a long…"
- This sounds a bit weak. I think the Japanese text says that the function is restored to almost the original or initial level of performance.
- This is probably all right, but to me, it wasn't quite clear what "advanced stage" refers to.
- I think this would be clearer if you put the definite article in front of "entrapped."
- This segment doesn't flow quite as smoothly as it should. Perhaps it could be modified to something like "…across the membrane to a point where backward flushing is insufficient to clean the membrane."
[訳例6]
Cleaning method
Physical cleaning: Filtration uses hollow fibers, into which the raw water pump supplies raw water and the cleaned water flows out of the fibers. Since continuous use of the fibers for filtration (1) causes the fibers gradually clogged, regular physical cleaning should be performed. This is done by a reverse-flow pump that (2) flows the water from the outside to the inside of the membrane and washes away the dirt attached to the membrane, thereby substantially restoring the initial performance of the membrane. Since the membrane nevertheless becomes progressively clogged with obstructing substances that cannot be removed by the physical cleaning, regular chemical cleaning is required.
Chemical cleaning: Long-term (3) operation of a membrane causes progressive clogging of the membrane. These membrane-clogging substances cannot be removed by the reverse-flow cleaning and the membrane differential pressure increases. The reverse-flow cleaning-resistant substances should be cleaned and removed regularly with chemicals.
- This sounds a bit odd. I think it would read more smoothly if you said something like "…causes the fibers to gradually become clogged.." or "…causes the fibers to gradually clog…"
- Do you think that "flows" expresses enough action? It seems a little passive to me. I think that since you already used "pump" as the verb, the word "flow" is not necessary. Also, if you use "flow" here, the water just moves around the filter and is not really forced through it. So the image is rather weak.
- Is it possible to operate a membrane? Perhaps a different verb would be better here. I think you could simply say "use."

■ The shape of the membrane and the membrane module
Water purification by means of a membrane is one type of solid-liquid separation technology, in which impurities in the water are removed by using pressure to pass the water through the microporous membrane. This process is capable of removing suspended sludge and bacteria, while ultra filtration membranes are able to remove viruses. Membranes manufactured by Maezawa are made of cellulose acetate with hollow fiber ultra filtration membranes with a molecular weight cut-off of 150,000. To facilitate the process of passing water through the membranes under pressure, the membranes are packed into a cylindrical housing to increase the packing density, providing a module membrane with a very large surface area.
[訳例2]
The water purification process characterized by membrane form and a membrane module is called a solid-liquid separation process, where impurities in water are removed under pressure through membranes having pores. This process allows for removing not only suspended matter and bacteria but also viruses (1) if ultrafiltration membrane is used. Maezawa Industries, Inc. (2) uses 150,000 molecular weight cut-off hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes made of acetylcellulose. To let water easily flow through membranes under pressure, Maezawa's system uses a membrane module that has membranes housed in a cylindrical container for (3) more intensive filtration process through larger surface of the membranes.
- This phrase is a bit of a problem because it sounds as though ultrafiltration membranes are used for removing suspended matter, bacteria, and viruses. The original text is emphasizing the role of the ultrafiltration membrane is filtering out only viruses.
- I think the logic here may be wrong. Does the original text say that Maezawa uses ultrafiltration membranes or does it say that membranes made by Maezawa are made of acetate cellulose with molecular weight of 150,000?
- I'm not quite sure what you mean by more intensive filtration. Perhaps this could be expressed in another way?
[訳例3]
Shape of Membrane and Membrane Module
Water treatment using a membrane is a solid-liquid separation technology in which (1) pressure is applied on a membrane having micro pores, through which impurities in water are removed. The solid-liquid separation technology can remove (2) not only suspended matters and bacteria, but also virus if an ultrafiltration membrane is used. The Maezawa membrane uses a hollow fiber type ultrafiltration membrane made of acetycellulose having a molecular cutoff of 150, 000. Water is treated by applying pressure on the membrane, which is facilitated by using a membrane module achieved by packing membranes into a cylindrical container with high concentration to obtain a large membrane area.
- I don't quite agree with the idea that pressure is applied on the membrane. I think pressure is applied to the water to force it through the microporous membrane.
- Care should be taken when using the "not only…but also…" form. In this case, you are implying that suspended matter, bacteria, and viruses are all removed by using an ultrafiltration membrane. But actually, the ultrafiltration membrane is used to remove viruses, not suspended matter or bacteria.
[訳例4]
■ Water purification treatment by the membrane shape and the membrane of the module membrane is a technology which separates solid from liquid to remove impurities in the water through the membrane by applying pressure to the membrane having micropores. (1) It removes not only suspensoid and bacteria but virus by ultrafiltration membrane. Maezawa membrane uses the hollow type ultrafiltration membrane of 150,000 fraction molecule weight using cellulose acetate as a material. In order to make it easy to apply pressure to pass the water, membrane module is used by placing the membrane in a cylindrical housing to increase integration for a large area.
- As we discussed in class, the position of the term "ultrafiltration membrane" is very important. This sentence implies that this ultrafiltration membrane is used to filter out substances, bacteria, and viruses, but this is not true. It is used to filter out only viruses.
[訳例5]
Membrane module
This method of water filtration uses a liquid/solid separation technology with (1) semi-permeable membranes to remove impurities from feed water. The system can catch not only suspended solids and bacteria, but even viruses by using hyper filtration technology. The Maezawa membrane is a hollow-fiber, hyper filtration membrane made of acetylcellulose with a molecular weight cut-off of 150,000 (2) dalton. To improve the filtration efficiency for producing (3) good permeate water from feed water flowing under pressure through the system, the membranes are assembled into a module encased in a cylindrical container in order to increase the packing density and the membrane surface area.
- Does this term sufficiently convey the size of the pores of the membrane? I think it is important to mention that the membrane has microscopic pores. I'm not so sure that the term "semi-permeable" conveys the same type of information.
- Although I know this is the unit of measure for molecular weight, is this generally-used term? Is it more common to leave this term out or is it usually included in a description?
- What exactly do you mean here by "good permeate water"? Does "good" refer to quality? Is this clear from the context of the sentence?
[訳例6]
The shape of the membrane and the membrane module: Membrane water purification is a solid-liquid separation technology that removes impurities in the water by delivering pressurized water onto a membrane with pores. This method can remove (1) not only suspended substances and germs, but viruses if an ultrafilter membrane is employed. The Maezawa membrane is an ultrafilter membrane consisting of hollow fibers made of cellulose acetate and having a molecular cutoff weight of 150,000. To facilitate removing substances when the pressurized water passes through the membrane, (2) a membrane module is used that is a cylindrical container containing a membrane in order to increase the density of the pores thereby increasing the surface area for filtration.
- This structure implies that the ultrafilter membrane is used to filter out suspended substances, bacteria, and viruses. Is this true? Or is the ultrafilter membrane used only for the removal of viruses?
- This segment is a bit awkward. It may be easier to understand if you simply this part of the sentence. You could say something like "…the membranes are packed into a cylindrical container in order to increase…"
