<中略>
ホログラム光ディスクの本格的な実用化は2010年前後とみられる。

General Electric has developed a holographic optical disk that uses thermoplastic material. Even simpler to manufacture than photosensitive resins, which are a mainstay in development today, the holographic optical disk has a capacity that puts today's DVDs to shame, loaded with a whopping five terabytes (one tera equals a trillion) of storage, 1,000 times more than current DVDs. With its massive memory expected to be used as a recording medium for long-running TV series, medical data and other applications, the first of the discs should go on sale starting from next year.

[訳例1]
The holographic disc uses a unique thermoplastic material that responds to a laser. Through injection molding, a single layer is formed by being impressed onto the disk. For this reason, no compression of material occurs during recording that is normally seen on photosensitive resin disks. It is said that simply by making impressions through injection molding the manufacturing costs will be greatly reduced. "At the very least we're talking about a capacity of at least 200 - 300 GB (1 GB = 10 billion) and in theory it could store as much as 5 terabytes of information," said GE Global Research optics engineer Brian Lawrence.
[訳例2]
The material used for the disc is GE’s originally developed thermoplastic that (1) reflects a laser. Thermoplastic resin is molded into a disc shape by injection molding to form a single layer structure. By using thermoplastic, material shrinkage can be eliminated that occurs when data is recorded onto the discs made of photosensitive resin. Because the disc can be manufactured simply by (2) the injection molding, manufacturing cost will be drastically reduced. According to Brian Lawrence, optical engineer at GE’s Global Research, maximum storage capacity of the disc will be at least 200 to 300 gigabytes (i.e. 200 to 300 billion bytes), and theoretically, it can reach up to five terabytes.

[訳例3]
The material GE selected for the product is their original thermoplastic resin that reacts with (1) laser. The new product, which is an injection-molded disc, has only one layer. This structure eliminates material contraction that a photosensitive-plastic disc suffers when storing data. Because the manufacturing process consists of only injection molding, the company can substantially cut the manufacturing cost. According to Brian Lawrence, an optics engineer at GE Global Research, the GE-developed optical disc can store at least 200 or 300 gigabytes of data (giga means one billion), and (2) logically up to five terabytes worth of data.

[訳例4]
GE’s proprietary laser reactive thermal plastic resin is used as a base material. The material is shaped by injection molding into a disc with a single layer structure, eliminating shrinkage problems that might occur on (1) photopolymer discs during data recording. By using such a simple manufacturing process, the manufacturing cost is also dramatically reduced. The disc provides a recording capacity of at least 200-300 gigabytes (a giga is a billion), and theoretically up to 5 terabytes, according to Mr. Brian Lawrence, (2) optical engineer, GE Global Research.
- photopolymer ⇒ photosensitive
- optical engineer, GE ⇒ optical engineer at GE
[訳例5]
The material employed is GE’s proprietary thermoplastic polymer responsive to a laser beam and injection-molded into a monolayer disk structure. This new (1) material and structure eliminate a shrinking effect that is observed when a photosensitive resin disk is subjected to a data recording process. Since the production of thermoplastic polymer disks only requires (2) injection-molding of a disk, production cost could be substantially reduced. Storage capacity of the holographic disk is 200 to 300 gigabytes (“giga” stands for one billion) at minimum and could theoretically be extended to 5 terabytes, according to Brian Lawrence, an optical engineer at GE Global Research Center.

[訳例6]
The new material is GE’s proprietary thermoplastic polymer that reacts to laser beams. The disc is (1) extruded into a single layer structure to preclude the problem of (2) volume change inherent to photosensitive resin that tends to shrink when data is written. The company is expecting a substantial reduction in the manufacturing cost as the process requires nothing more than (1) extrusion molding. The disc has a capacity of “at least 200 to 300 gigabytes (a gigabyte is one billion bytes). Theoretically, this technology could enable a single disc to store up to 5 terabytes,” according to Brian Lawrence, an optics scientist at the GE Global Research Center.
- The industry term for 射出成型 appears to be “injection molding”.
- This is wordy. Since the photosensitive resin shrinks, it’s implied that there will be a change in volume. I think we can do without these words.

Said to be the successor in next generation DVDs (capacity of 20 - 25 GB), holographic optical discs are bringing the use of photosensitive resins into the forefront of development. The viscous nature of photosensitive resins hardens when data is recorded onto the disk. To maintain the layered thickness of accumulated memory upon the disk, it's necessary to sandwich the layers between glass substrates.
[訳例2]
Holographic optical discs are said to be successors to the next generation DVDs that have storage capacity of 20 to 25 gigabytes. So far, most holographic optical discs have been developed by using photosensitive resin. Photosensitive resin in a viscous state becomes solid when data is recorded on them. In order to maintain the thickness of the recorded layers that are stacked in a disc shape, upper and lower glass substrates are required to sandwich the stack of layers.
[訳例3]
Photosensitive plastic is the mainstream material used for developing a holographic optical disc, a promising successor to (1) the next-generation DVD that (2) has the storage capacity of (3) 20 or 25 gigabytes. Photosensitive plastic is viscous by nature and solidifies when it stores data. To maintain the thickness of storage layers (4) piled up to form a disc, glass substrates are needed to (5) sandwich the layers.
- the next-generation DVD → next-generation DVDs
- has → have
- 20 or 25 → 20 - 25
- piled up to form a disc → piled up on the disc
- Good verb usage here!
[訳例4]
The holographic disc is considered to be a successor to the next generation DVD (with recording capacity of 20-25 gigabytes). Until now, the holographic discs using photopolymers have been brought into the (1) mainstream of the development. A (2) photopolymer material in a viscous state is cured in recording data. For the photopolymer disc, in order to maintain the thickness of the recording layers stacked in a disc shape, the layers need to be sandwiched between upper and lower glass substrates.
- development mainstream
- photopolymer ⇒ photosensitive
[訳例5]
Holographic optical disks are expected to replace next generation DVD disks (with a storage capacity of 20 to 25 gigabytes) and the top candidate for the holographic disk material is photosensitive resins. A drawback of this material is that a photosensitive resin in a viscous liquid state cures when data is written. In order to maintain the thickness of the disk-shaped recording multilayer unchanged, the layer needs to be sandwiched with glass substrates.
[訳例6]
The development of holographic optical disc storage, which is (1) heralded as the successor to the next-generation DVD (capacity: 20 to 25 gigabytes), centers on photosensitive resin. This approach requires glass substrates to (2) sandwich the circular recording layer to maintain an even thickness as the viscous resin is cured to harden during data recording.
- Great verb! One of my favorites. I love it!
- Another great verb for the context!

Although GE hasn't calculated exactly how much of a saving their optical discs will generate, DVD makers can manufacture holographic optical discs inexpensively at their existing plants, thus saving them the need to build costly new facilities.
Holographic optical discs are expected to become commercially viable sometime around 2010.
saving(削減、節約)の動詞に generate が用いられる。
[訳例2]
GE does not specify the amount that will be saved, however, estimates that the discs can be fabricated at an extremely low cost because DVD manufacturers can (1) retrofit existing facilities without (2) introducing fabricating facilities dedicated for holographic optical discs.
Mass marketing of the holographic optical discs (3) will be in around 2010.
- Excellent word choice!
- Although the Japanese does use 「導入する」, “introduce isn’t the best word to use in this context. While a company may introduce new methods and manufacturing procedures, it wouldn’t “introduce” facilities. Really, I think all we need to say here is that DVD manufacturers don’t need new facilities. The most natural word that comes to mind is that manufactures don’t need to “build” new facilities, but it doesn’t truly say that in the Japanese. Perhaps we can discuss this in class.
- will begin around 2010
[訳例3]
Although GE (1) has not estimated the prospective cost reduction yet, it believes that DVD manufacturers can produce the optical discs at a much lower (2) cost (3), because they can use existing facilities without any further equipment.
(4) It seems that holographic optical discs will be ready for full-scale commercial use around 2010.

[訳例4]
Compared to the (1) photopolymer disc, the thermal plastic disc can be manufactured with a significantly reduced cost, because DVD manufacturers can utilize their existing manufacturing facilities and do not need new facilities dedicated to holographic disc production, (2) according to GE, though the company (3) did not provide specific cost reduction data.
The holographic optical discs will be commercially available (4) in around 2010.

[訳例5]
According to GE, the new (1) material and structure are advantageous in that DVD manufacturers do not need to introduce new holographic disk-dedicated production lines but can use existing DVD production tools, resulting in lower-cost manufacturing, (2) although they have not specifically calculated how much DVD manufacturers could save.
Full-scale commercialization of holographic optical disks is expected to (3 be somewhere around (4) the year 2010.

Though GE has yet to determine specifically (1) how much the cost can be saved, company sources noted that DVD makers could immediately adopt this technology to radically cut the cost of producing holographic optical discs because they can use their existing facilities without investing in any additional equipment.
Holographic optical disc storage is predicted to become fully commercial (2) in or around 2010.
- the cost savings
